Report

Karen Hills admitted Spurs Ladies made life difficult for themselves against Forest Green on Sunday - but was happy with the way the team saw the game out for a 2-1 win.

Two goals in a minute in the first half from Wendy Martin and Sophie McLean put Spurs in the driving seat in the FA Women's Premier League South clash at Cheshunt FC.

A third goal didn't materialise though and Paige Stewart pulled a goal back for Forest Green five minutes into the second half.

The visitors looked to push on for an equaliser but Spurs held firm to make it three wins out of four so far in the FAWPL.

"We looked like we might run away with it in the first half," reflected manager Karen. "But credit to Forest Green, they regrouped and made it difficult for us.

"We went 1-0 up on 12 minutes when Wendy Martin met Avilla Bergin's corner and planted home a header.

"The second goal was a good team goal. We won the ball back from the kick-off and went from back to front. Toni-Anne Wayne rolled out to Jenna Schillaci, she found Sophie McLean who went down the left, combined with Katie O'Leary and then drilled into the bottom corner.

"We looked to push on in the second half but we let Forest Green back into it with a goal of our own making, a mix-up at the back and that unsettled us a bit.

"We made a few changes including bringing on Amy Cooper late on to help tighten us up in midfield and we saw the game out well.

"In a way, it was good to win a game like that because we might have crumbled under pressure at 2-1 at times last season. We always want to play our football but it doesn't hurt to be able to grind out a result as well."

It's a busy spell for the ladies, who now take on Charlton in the FAWPL at Cheshunt on Thursday night (7.45pm) before meeting Forest Green again, this time away, also in league action on Sunday.
