Tottenham survived a second-half Sunderland fightback to record their first away win of the season at the Stadium of Light.
A Kevin Phillips goal twelve minutes from time set up an exciting finish to a game that had been heading the way of the visitors.
And Sunderland almost snatched a point when Spurs defender Chris Perry was forced to make a desperate clearance off the line in injury-time after a mix-up with keeper Neil Sullivan.
Glenn Hoddle's side had controlled the opening hour and led courtesy of goals from Christian Ziege and Teddy Sheringham.
It was no more than their overall superiority deserved as they adapted better than Sunderland to the heavy rain and gusty conditions
But for all their pressure in the final third of the pitch, Hoddle's side could not fashion any clear-cut openings before Ziege made the breakthrough in unlikely circumstances.
With 26 minutes gone the German picked up possession wide on the left and swung in a right-foot cross, only for the swirling wind to catch the ball and float it over the head of Sunderland keeper Jurgen Macho.
It was Ziege's third goal of the campaign and after the frustration of watching Liverpool's treble winning season from the bench he seems to be enjoying a new lease of life under Hoddle.
Spurs moved further ahead after the break when Teddy Sheringham rose to head home Simon Davies' cross from the edge of the area.
That seemed to spark Sunderland who at last began to give the home fans something to cheer.
Kevin Kilbane went close with a header before Phillips finally got his side back into the game with a trademark finish.
Phillips reacted first to a Niall Quinn flick-on and volleyed the ball past a helpless Sullivan from close range.
It gave Sunderland hope but they could not capitalise despite a succession of corners in the closing minutes.
A jittery Spurs just about held on and victory moves them above their opponents in the Premiership.
