Report

Michael Owen sent Liverpool four points clear at the Premiership summit with a late penalty that ended Spurs' brave resistance at Anfield.

Dean Richards' late equaliser looked to have given Glenn Hoddle's side a hard-earned point after Danny Murphy had put Liverpool ahead.

But England striker Owen was the hero as he gave Liverpool victory with an 86th minute penalty - repeating his winner in the dying seconds against Chelsea.

And with Arsenal losing to Blackburn and Manchester United failing to beat struggling Aston Villa, it left Anfield in jubilant mood.

Gerard Houllier's side lacked any rhythm in a tight first 45 minutes, which would been highly satisfying for Spurs boss Hoddle.

Spurs' £8m capture Robbie Keane was busy, and he threatened when Jamie Carragher's misplaced clearance landed at his feet but could not take advantage.

Liverpool did get the ball in the net courtesy of Owen as he collected Salif Diao's astute pass, but referee Mike Riley pulled play back for a foul by the Senegal midfield man on Richards.

But Spurs were doing more than simply surviving, and almost snatched the lead twice in the space of seconds on the hour.

Gustavo Poyet was the player who was denied on both occasions, first by a brilliant save from Jerzy Dudek following a strike from 18 yards, and then when his header was scrambled off the line from the resulting corner.

Murphy then put Liverpool ahead in spectacular style with 19 minutes left.

Dietmar Hamman set up the England midfielder, who drilled a right-foot drive past Kasey Keller from 25 yards.

Spurs boss Hoddle was suddenly the manager forced to consider changes, and he opted for replacing Teddy Sheringham with Les Ferdinand.

And Spurs were celebrating with eight minutes left when substitute Milenko Acimovic set up Richards to equalise with a header.

But the Londoners' joy was short-lived as Owen was hauled down by Stephen Carr moments from time.

The England man beat Keller from the penalty spot to restore Liverpool's lead, and secure three vital points.
