Report

Goals from Kevin Phillips and Tore Andre Flo saw Sunderland defeat Spurs and hand a first Premiership win to manager Howard Wilkinson.

On a day when Phillips' long-time partner Niall Quinn announced he was hanging up his boots, the Stadium of Light could have witnessed the blossoming of a new partnership.

Quinn confirms retirement For Sunderland it was a far more encouraging performance and the first time they had scored two goals at home since April Fool's Day.

Spurs had plenty of chances but were unable to convert and missed out on the chance to leapfrog Manchester United into fourth place.

The game started at a furious pace with Gus Poyet almost setting up Robbie Keane in the opening minutes.

Spurs almost gifted the home side the opening goal in the sixth minute in a bizarre incident.

Defender Chris Perry, under pressure from Phillips, attempted to clear but contrived to fire the ball towards his own goal.

A backtracking Kasey Keller did well to make the save and did even better to prevent himself from carrying the ball over the line.

Tottenham came more into the game with Dean Richards getting up highest from a corner after 23 minutes, but his header was just off target.

The visitors broke in the 31st minute with Teddy Sheringham feeding Simon Davies and his cross dropped invitingly for Darren Anderton, but his volley was blocked by Phil Babb.

Sunderland had a great chance four minutes before half-time when Gavin McCann slipped a pass into Phillips.

The Sunderland forward rounded Keller but he took the ball wide and his shot was blocked on the line by Perry.

Sunderland came out positively in the second half, but Spurs remained dangerous on the break and Sheringham supplied a perfect ball to release Davies.

The Welshman found himself clear on goal and he chipped the onrushing Jurgen Macho, but saw the ball fall the wrong side of the upright.

Sunderland got the breakthrough on the hour when the impressive Procter, who was making his Premiership debut, found Gray and his right-foot cross found the head of Phillips.

Two minutes later they found themselves two in front when Phillips sent a lovely ball over the top for Flo.

The big Norweigan showed good pace and strength to hold off Perry before firing past Keller from a tight angle.

Spurs should have pulled one back when Sheringham laid the ball on for Stephen Carr, but with the goal at his mercy he shot over the bar.

Phillips was denied a second goal by a good stop from Keller, but it proved to be enough to help Sunderland out of the relegation zone.
