Report

A Sami Hyypia goal earned a point for Liverpool in an entertaining contest against Tottenham at Anfield. Erik Edman gave the visitors the lead with a sweetly struck 35-yard effort before Luis Garcia curled in a left-foot shot to level for the Reds.

Spurs went in front again through a deflected Robbie Keane header, and Liverpool's woes increased when Steven Gerrard missed a penalty.

But Hyypia lashed in from 18-yards prior to Gerrard hitting the post.

There was an impeccably observed minute's silence at Anfield before kick-off in remembrance of the 96 Liverpool fans who died in the Hillsborough tragedy on 15 April, 1989.

Spurs started the better as they passed the ball around with confidence and authority before taking the lead in spectacular fashion.

Edman's strike left Reds keeper Jerzy Dudek helpless as he was watched it sail into the top-right corner.

Liverpool may have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League with their impressive display at Juventus in midweek but they have been plagued by inconsistency in the Premiership.

Against Spurs they looked decidedly lethargic but woke from their stupor as the first half wore on.

Spurs showed a battling edge to their passing play but finally succumbed to another quality goal as the Reds equalised through Garcia's left-foot curler.

Fernando Morientes had a powerful header smartly saved by Paul Robinson as Liverpool ended the half strongly and began in similar vein after the break.

But Spurs regained the lead against the run of play when Mauricio Pellegrino's poor play allowed Kanoute to cross for Keane to head home via a deflection off Jamie Carragher.

The Reds had an immediate chance to level but Gerrard blazed a penalty wide after he had won the spot-kick following a foul by Michael Carrick.

Spurs went straight up the other end and Kanoute was high with a shot before the home side again pulled level through Hyypia.

Liverpool were desperate to win in their chase for a Champions League qualifying slot and Steve Finnan was agonisingly wide with a shot across goal.

Gerrard hit the post and Morientes skied a shot from close range as late pressure from the Reds proved fruitless.

They had to settle for a point and lag three points behind fourth-placed Everton who have a game in hand.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard: "I should have scored the penalty and I apologise to the the fans and players. I should have won the game for Liverpool. "That's the end of me now on penalties but I could have won it in open play as well with the shot which hit the post.

"We've dominated the last 10 minutes of the first half and the whole of the second half so it is disappointing not to get the three points."
