Report

Spurs kept their unbeaten run at the start of the season going with a well-earned point at West Brom. Zoltan Gera gave the hosts a quick-fire lead when he controlled Riccy Scimeca's pass and slotted past Paul Robinson.

Spurs hit back and Pedro Mendes and Jermain Defoe went close before Defoe's 20-yard shot crept under Russell Hoult.

The lively Kanu saw an overhead kick disallowed for offside while Sean Davis' volley was tipped over by Hoult as both sides pressed for a winner.

The hosts got off to the perfect start when just three minutes in Gera neatly controlled a pass from Scimeca and shot low into the bottom corner past Robinson.

Despite their disappointing start Spurs soon got into their stride and began playing some neat one-touch football, with the maverick Thimothee Atouba central to their attacking threat.

The Baggies missed a chance to double their lead when Geoff Horsfield took advantage of a Noureddine Naybet slip but saw his shot blocked.

At the other end Freddie Kanoute skipped through the West Brom defence but his cut-back could not find a Spurs player.

Mendes, a cultured influence in the centre of the midfield, saw a fierce right-foot shot deflected narrowly wide before the same fate befell Defoe as the visitors began to up the tempo.

By the half-hour mark it was all Spurs, Davis and Atouba both going close before Defoe got his team back on level terms.

The England striker evaded two tackles before sending in a left-foot shot from 20 yards that crept under the body of Hoult.

Moments later West Brom had a goal chalked off after pinball in the Spurs box led to Kanu hitting the post and then scoring with an overhead kick, only for the Nigerian to be ruled offside.

Spurs started brightly after the break too and Atouba's clever cross picked out Davis, who saw his left-foot shot tipped over by Hoult.

West Brom thought they should have had a penalty when Horsfield was played in by Kanu and fell under a challenge from Robinson, but the keeper looked to have made contact with the ball.

Spurs boss Jacques Santini brought on Robbie Keane for Defoe, the Irishman's first action of the season after recovering from ankle ligament damage.

But the 24-year-old could not find a way through and the Baggies ended stronger, with Robinson punching impressively from a succession of high balls knocked into the Spurs box.
