Report

Tottenham tightened their grip on the Premiership's fourth place thanks to Aaron Lennon's winner against Bolton.

Lennon gathered Michael Carrick's low cross before bursting through Bolton's defence and angling home a shot.

Bolton had earlier hit the post through Hidetoshi Nakata as they failed to turn their dominance into goals.

But, in their efforts to equalise, Stelios Giannakopoulos was harshly denied a late penalty as Bolton's Uefa Cup hopes took a blow.

There was plenty of energy and drive from both sides at the start of the match but it was Bolton who created the first threat on goal.

Nakata latched on to a knockdown by striker Jared Borghetti and struck a sweet half-volley from 15 yards out only to see it come crashing back off the post.

The visitors took a grip on the match after that chance but were held at arm's length by some resolute Spurs defending in which Michael Dawson was a commanding presence.

But the home side came under increasing pressure and keeper Paul Robinson's goal was living a charmed life.

Bolton midfielder Ivan Campo should have done better when he ran on to Kevin Davies' flick on from a long throw but he could only mange to glance a shot high from eight yards.

Gary Speed also shot over as the visitors worked another opening and Dawson blocked a Giannakopoulos strike with Spurs managing to hang on until half-time at an anxious White Hart Lane.

Tottenham striker Robbie Keane was replaced by Lee Barnard for a second half during which the home side raised their game.

They created two chances in quick succession with Dawson seeing his far post header hit team-mate Anthony Gardner before his follow-up shot was saved.

Almost immediately, Danny Murphy fizzed a volley agonisingly wide from the edge of the box.

And, while Bolton failed to make their superiority count, Spurs did not fall into the same trap with Lennon putting them ahead with his angled shot on the hour mark.

Bolton's attempts to level saw Giannakopoulos go down under a rash Dawson challenge but referee Alan Wiley waved away what seemed justifiable claims for a spot-kick.

A long range Jay-Jay Okocha strike forced Robinson into a save at full stretch but Spurs clung on to increase the gap on rivals Arsenal, who have three games left, to seven points.
