Tottenham overwhelmed Championship side Southend to book their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Midfielder Didier Zokora made a buccaneering run before setting up Robbie Keane to fire Spurs ahead.

Jermaine Jenas touched in livewire Aaron Lennon's cross to add the home side's second but a Freddy Eastwood penalty gave Southend a lifeline.

But their revival was short-lived as Mido slid in to convert another Lennon cross and secure a Spurs win.

A valiant Southend lost to Spurs after extra-time when they met in the Carling Cup quarter-finals earlier in the season but could not produce a similar resilience this time around.

The home side attacked with pace and power as well as numbers from the start and were rewarded with an early goal.

Keane made space for himself and received Zokora's pass before firing in a low shot which took a slight deflection off Steven Hammell.

Southend had a chance to deliver a stinging blow to a dominant Spurs only for Gower to mistime a far-post shot from Eastwood's cross.

But Spurs should have put the tie out of reach before the break had Keane showed a sharper edge in front of goal as he squandered a host of chances.

They eventually added to their lead after 50 minutes when Jenas, who was earlier denied a penalty, stuck his leg out to glance in a Lennon cross.

Kevin Maher had a shot excellently tipped over by Cerny as Southend came close to pulling one back.

And the visitors were given hope of an unlikely comeback when awarded a 69th-minute penalty.

Hossam Ghaly handled and Eastwood made no mistake from the spot.

But Spurs avoided a nervy finish when the impressive Lennon set up Mido for his first goal since October.

Tottenham boss Martin Jol: "I thought it was really comfortable at 2-0. Then Rob Styles gave that penalty. "Normally, when you are 3-0 or 4-0 up it is not a problem but it is different when you are 2-0 up. But then we got the third goal and that was good.

"We proved that we have a good squad with the win."
