Newcastle fought back from a goal down to record back-to-back victories for the first time since December.
Habib Beye almost put Newcastle ahead when his shot hit the bar before Darren Bent's header put Spurs in front.
Newcastle equalised when Nicky Butt's scuffed shot found the corner, and after the break Geremi's free-kick put them ahead as they began to dominate.
After a Mark Viduka dummy Michael Owen curled home a shot, before Obafemi Martins scored with a fine solo goal.
The order of the day was always likely to be attack at White Hart Lane as both sides lined up with three strikers apiece.
However, when the first chance came, on only five minutes, it was not to one of the plethora of forwards on show, but to midfielder Beye.
After cutting in from the right the Senegal international over-ran the ball but got it back after an error from Jonathan Woodgate and lashed a fierce, rising drive against the bar.
It was a lucky escape and former Magpie Woodgate almost added delight to his relief moments later only for Steve Harper to superbly to push the defender's goalbound header away.
Spurs were now in the ascendancy, with Robbie Keane, Dimitar Berbatov and Bent causing Newcastle plenty of problems.
And it was Bent, making a rare start, who broke the deadlock on 26 minutes when he thumped in a header from Steed Malbranque's perfect left-wing cross.
In contrast, Newcastle's trio of Viduka, Owen and Martins barely managed a shot between them in the first half.
It took midfielder Butt to drag his side back into the match, when he swung his boot optimistically at the ball and his shot surprised everyone by finding the bottom left corner of the goal.
On the balance of play, Newcastle would have been very happy to have gone into half-time on level terms.
Straight after the restart, Joey Barton smashed a drive inches past the foot of the post as Newcastle set out to improve their position.
And on 52 minutes Newcastle stunned their hosts when they took the lead through a Geremi free-kick that left keeper Paul Robinson rooted to the spot.
If Robinson was at fault for the goal, he soon did his best to make up for it when he produced a fine stop to deny Viduka.
But he was powerless to prevent Owen scoring soon after, as a rampant Newcastle tore Spurs apart with a move that saw Viduka step over the ball and Owen curl in from 12 yards.
It could, and should have been 4-1 when Owen found himself clean through after Michael Dawson misjudged the bounce of the ball, but the England striker skied his effort.
However, Newcastle were not to be denied and Martins duly obliged when he left Teemu Tainio on his backside before slotting coolly past Robinson.
Tottenham coach Gus Poyet: "There were far too many mistakes out there. It is hard for me to talk right now, because I am trying to stay calm. "I think we should apologise to the fans. The season is not finished yet, but I'm not sure if our players know.
"We will analyse this later and I will be looking for a big reaction."
