Report

Spurs Ladies are off the mark in the FA Women's Premier League South.

Wendy Martin struck the only goal of the game to secure the ladies' first victory of the campaign at Gillingham on Sunday.

"I'm delighted for the girls," said manager, Karen Hills. "There were some outstanding performances and we now have to take that into our next game at Lewes on Sunday.

"We know this is going to be another tough game but after the performance against Gillingham, we will be ready for the next challenge."

Gillingham's game plan to build from the back played right into Spurs' hands as Siobhan Wilson, Wendy Martin and Bianca Wilson worked tirelessly to stop any attacks being created.

Siobhan rifled in an early effort that brought the best out of the home goalkeeper and as Spurs piled on the pressure, Wendy Martin was there to open the scoring, her persistence in front of goal rewarded.

Amy Cooper, back from an England Under-19 training camp, covered every blade of grass in the second half as the team looked to see the game out.

Chances were few and far between and when Gills had a rare sight at goal, Jo Ayre produced a fine save to maintain the 1-0 lead.

Karen added: "I made a few important decisions with team selection and the way we played and thankfully they paid off.

"The girls worked really hard for the win and now we have to build on this against Lewes."

Spurs Ladies: Ayre, O'Halloran, Pittuck, Downie, Schillaci, Maloney, Cooper, Wilson, Baptiste (Burr, 75), Cheeseman, Martin.
