Match Report

It's a case of picking themselves up, dusting themselves down and starting again for Spurs Ladies at Forest Green on Sunday. Manager Karen Hills couldn't hide her disappointment after a late defeat against Charlton in the FA Women's Premier League on Thursday night. On top of that, the team could be without two key players - Wendy Martin and Sophie McLean - who will need to overcome ankle injuries to make the trip to Gloucestershire (kick-off 2pm). Karen spoke ahead of the match against Charlton about the need to iron out individual mistakes and unfortunately, that proved costly again. Bianca Baptiste beat goalkeeper Megen Lynch to a ball over the top to open the scoring at Cheshunt on 11 minutes but Spurs provided Charlton with the opportunity to level when a back pass fell short and Gemma Shepherd intercepted to score. Baptiste almost turned home Jenna Schillaci's cross but the team then lost the influential Martin, replaced by Maya Vio. Avilla Bergin had a goal disallowed in the second half and it looked like it was going to end 1-1 before Charlton snatched the winner through Jenny Newman two minutes from time. Rosie Kmita went close twice after that but it wasn't to be. "It's a huge shame because if anything we deserved to win, let alone draw," said Karen. "We played well, played with real quality at times, our fitness levels were good and we were just undone right at the end. The girls were all gutted. "We even had chances after that late goal. I can't fault the players' effort, but we've got punished for our mistakes again. "It was also a blow to lose Wendy and Sophie, but there were lots of positives as well. Katie O'Leary was excellent up front and Maya did really when we came on." Spurs now face Forest Green just a week after beating the same team in the FAWPL. "I'm sure Forest Green will be determined to put last week's result right but we'll go there with confidence, despite the defeat against Charlton," added Karen. "We're playing well and if we play to our capabilities, we'll get the right result." Spurs Ladies v Charlton: Toni-Anne Wayne, Sophie McLean (Lucia Leon), Alex Keown, Jenna Schillaci, Leah Rawle, Wendy Martin (Maya Vio), Shannon Moloney, Riana Soobadoo (Rosie Kmita), Avilla Bergin, Katie O'Leary, Bianca Baptiste. Substitutes (not used): Amy Cooper, Mollie Kmita, Chloe Morgan.
