Spurs Ladies recorded a statement-making win to begin their quest in retaining the Boux Avenue Women’s Cup by hitting 12 goals without reply past Whyteleafe on Tuesday night.
Nikita Whinnett tested goalkeeper Sophie Bridson early before the breakthrough after 16 minutes as Wendy Martin met Cheryl Williams’ corner to the back-post and powered home her header. Just four minutes later, Whinnett’s cross from the right flank was too high for Blanchflower, but the ball looped over Bridson and dipped into the net.
Whinnett and Blanchflower combined near the byline as the latter found Abbie Bensted, who on the turn made no mistake in finding the top corner with a thunderous finish from just inside the area. Williams’ 25-yard dipping free-kick forced a diving save from Bridson, Whinnett’s strike was tipped into the path of Blanchflower who just couldn’t guide her chance on target before a fourth goal arrived on 41 minutes. Moloney’s lay-off from 20-yards was hit first-time by Bensted whose strike arrowed into the top corner.
The pattern remained the same into the second half and just four minutes after the restart, Leanne Mabey prodded the ball over the line from Williams’ corner. A carbon-copy goal arrived two minutes later, Martin connected with Williams’ corner for a guided finish.
It was seventh-heaven for Spurs on the stroke of an hour, Blanchflower drifted into the box striking emphatically across Bridson. She was at it again just two minutes later, sweeping the ball across the floor for another driven finish.
Whinnett’s trickery saw her taken down inside the area by Emma Cottier-Small, but Bridson wasn’t to be beaten this time and pushed Whinnett's spot-kick past the post. A ninth goal arrived 13 minutes from time, Williams’ cross-field pass was finished inside the far-post by Whinnett - making it nine goals in back-to-back games.
The first hat-trick of the night went to Whinnett nine minutes from time, as she placed home after Blanchflower’s close-range strike from Sophie McLean’s looped pass was tipped her way. Blanchflower guided the ball underneath Bridson for her third on 83 minutes, and a hat-trick of hat-tricks was completed with five minutes remaining. Bensted, making her first-team debut, carried a lot of clout behind her delightful finish across goal.
