Report

It was defeat for Spurs Women as we lost 3-0 to Manchester City at the Hive in the Barclay’s FA Women’s Super League on Sunday (4 April).

A Becky Spencer own goal, Janine Beckie finish and Caroline Weir tap-in secured the three points for City despite an improved showing from us in the second half.

Rehanne Skinner made three changes from the side that lost to Arsenal last weekend as Rachel Williams, So-hyun Cho and Lucy Quinn took the places of Rosella Ayane, Josie Green and Gemma Davison in the starting XI.

City started the game strongest when Georgia Stanway struck the crossbar from 25 yards inside three minutes. Just a minute later they took the lead when Spencer appeared to get the final touch from a Chloe Kelly corner which ended up in the net.

The visitors continued to pile on the pressure as the first half progressed with Ellen White putting a good opportunity wide from close range. Beckie then scored in the 38th minute with a composed finish past Spencer after being slotted in behind by Sam Mewis to make it 2-0.

We came out after half-time with much more attacking intent, pressing higher up the pitch and forcing City backwards. Substitute Kerys Harrop’s free-kick was inches away from being headed in by Williams but the forward couldn’t connect with the ball.

Despite our good start to the second half, Weir made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute after a quick City counter-attack was cut back by Kelly and passed into the net by the midfielder.

Jess Naz, who replaced Rianna Dean, had a shot blocked with 10 minutes remaining, before the visitors nearly extended their lead with Beckie and Lauren Hemp both hitting efforts off target. Our best opportunity to score came after we won the ball deep in City territory, but Naz couldn’t steer her shot into the far corner.

The result means we remain in eighth place. We’re back in action after the international break (Sunday 18 April) in the Vitality Women's FA Cup against Reading at the Madejski Stadium (2pm).
