Match Report

First half, 1st minute Spurs are quickest out of the blocks, with Darren Anderton - from the sort of range he scored from in the quarter-final against Leeds - almost scoring with an explosive, dipping drive. The England star is only denied by a finger-tip save from Shay Given.

From the resulting corner, Anderton manages to get ahead of the defenders on the near post for another half-chance, but his volley flies wide.

Newcastle are under intense pressure, with Given receiving his fourth backpass in as many minutes - and slicing it into touch.

From another corner, Sol Campbell rises highest but can't get the right direction or power on the header. Newcastle's backs-to-the-wall defending is typified by the fact that it is Alan Shearer who clears.

With Spurs keeping the pressure on, the first signs of the tension show on the pitch as Warren Barton and Armstrong clash and briefly square up before thinking better of any early indiscreation.

Newcastle show their first signs of any attacking intent, with Shearer and Speed linking up down the middle of the park, but the move fizzles out.

Spurs bounce back and win a corner from which the head of Campbell is clearly the target, but he is penalised as he jumps with, and into, Given.

The game is settling down into a pattern, albeit fast-paced and counter-attacking. Newcastle appear to have weathered the initial storm, but are finding it difficult to maintain any lasting possession.

Ian Walker sees serious action for the first time as Shearer gets in among the defenders and causes confusion as the ball bobbles around the box. Walker collects safely.

Newcastle finally carve their first real opening as Shearer forges down the right and floats in a long cross from well outside the penalty area. Hammam looks set to meet it at pace but mysteriously fails to attack the ball, which bounces past him to safety. Not for the first time the Toon Army must wish for Shearer to be on the end of his own build-up work.

Nolberto Solano shoots wide of Ian Walker's right post. Tackles fly in from both sides in midfield.

Solano turns in from the right but shoots over.

Anderton and Ginola combine in midfield and Tottenham win a throw.

Shearer touches a ball through the Tottenham defence for Solano but Campbell beats him to the ball.

Shearer rises at the back post but is beaten to a cross and concedes a foul.

Sherwood dispossess Solano on the edge of the Spurs penalty box.

Ginola threatens to run at the Newcastle defence but Griffin thwarts him.

Carr clears a Lee cross.

Ginola dazzles but is forced to play it square and the ball is eventually passed back to Walker in the Tottenham goal.
