Report

Tottenham kept their slim Uefa Cup hopes alive with a win against Birmingham City thanks to a Gus Poyet wonder-strike and one of the goalkeeping clangers of the season.

Spurs went ahead inside seven minutes thanks to quick-thinking Robbie Keane, who capitalised on the blunder by on-loan Birmingham keeper Andy Marriott.

Birmingham fought back and deserved to equalise through a Paul Devlin penalty after 77 minutes.

But as the game headed for a draw, Poyet atoned for the penalty, when he brought down Christophe Dugarry, by firing in a superb volley just two minutes from time.

The win was the perfect anniversary gift for Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle, who was celebrating two years in the White Hart Lane hot-seat.

The result leaves Steve Bruce's men with a nervous run-in as they look to avoid the drop after just one year in the Premiership .

The opening minutes saw Birmingham dominate but without a cutting edge in the absence of the injured Clinton Morrison.

Blues striker Geoff Horsfield missed an excellent chance in the second minute.

He controlled the ball after a diagonal free-kick and turned brilliantly - but dragged his shot across the face of goal from six yards.

Then came Marriott's mistake.

The on-loan Barnsley keeper collected a tame cross and dropped the ball at his feet ready to thump it up field.

However, he failed to look behind him and Keane nipped in to rob him of possession and roll the ball into an empty net.

The goal had Tottenham's tails up as efforts from Poyet and Darren Anderton went narrowly wide.

At the other end, Kasey Keller was forced into a fantastic reaction save after 28 minutes, clawing Dugarry's flick round his right-hand post.

And from the resulting corner, Ledley King had to hook Matthew Upson's shot off his own goalline.

The Midlanders had a penalty appeal turned down by referee David Elleray after Poyet pulled down Stern John as half-time approached. John was booked for diving.

After the break, the visitors looked the most purposeful and deserved to reap their reward.

The referee had few doubts about awarding a penalty after Poyet brought down Dugarry.

Devlin made no mistake from the spot and looked to have grabbed a share of the spoils for the visitors.

But that was before Poyet fired home from 18 yards with just two minutes to go.
