Report

Mark Viduka struck twice as Leeds boosted their survival hopes with a hard-fought point against Tottenham at Elland Road.

Leeds had looked on course for their first home win for two months when Viduka fired them ahead in a dominant opening spell.

But Peter Reid's side were given a major scare as Teddy Sheringham and former Elland Road striker Robbie Keane scored in quick succession for Spurs before half-time.

It was left to Viduka to rescue Leeds with a penalty 14 minutes from time to take his goal tally to eight in four games - and leave his side six points clear of the drop zone.

Leeds had gone into the game in confident mood after their 6-1 thrashing of Charlton last weekend.

And for the first half hour it was all plain sailing as stand-in boss Reid looked set to mark his home bow by delivering the club's first win at Elland Road since early February.

Alan Smith headed an early corner from Ian Harte on to the roof of the Spurs net, and Viduka had one effort saved by Kasey Keller before sending a volley just wide.

The Australian striker finally scored on 31 minutes, latching on to a pass from Harry Kewell to slot home.

It took Spurs just eight minutes to turn the game on its head.

Having started to impose themselves with some slick midfield passing, Glenn Hoddle's side equalised when Sheringham rose to head home a Goran Bunjevcevic cross.

Three minutes later Keane tricked his way past Harte, Eirik Bakke and Lucas Radebe and curled a fine right-foot shot past Paul Robinson.

Reid brought on James Milner for right-back Danny Mills in an attempt to give his side more of a cutting edge after the break.

But Tottenham almost struck again when Keane's drive took a deflection of Radebe and went just inches wide.

Two minutes later Leeds won a penalty when Kewell was brought down by Keller and Viduka made no mistake from the spot.

The home side had chances to grab a late winner, but Keller saved a header from Smith and Mauricio Taricco made a vital interception to deny Viduka the chance of a second hat-trick in as many games.
