Report

A goal by Jeff Kenna stopped Spurs from staging a classic smash-grab-raid at St Andrews.

The defender showed his strikers the way to goal with a 67th-minute equaliser to wipe out the lead Teddy Sheringham had given Spurs on 54 minutes.

Birmingham, with Robbie Savage passing a fitness test, made most of the running but were denied by a their own poor finishing and some stubborn Spurs defending.

They threatened to draw first blood when Stern John was presented with a golden opportunity as Clinton Morrison flicked on Kenna's pass.

But his attempt to lob the Spurs keeper Kasey Keller ballooned gently into the American's arms.

Birmingham dominated but lacked the cutting edge to open up a resolute Spurs defence well marshalled by Dean Richards.

With Sheringham in a withdrawn role, Robbie Keane had little support up front and he was not helped by poor service.

It took Spurs 42 minutes to muster their first serious shot on target, with Stephen Carr surging forward before firing straight at Nico Vaesen.

Birmingham also set the early pace in the second half, but it was Spurs who broke out of their defensive shell to nick the lead.

Christian Ziege galloped down the left and delivered a cross which Vaesen failed to deal with, and the ball fell for Sheringham to slot home from eight yards.

That opened the game up as Birmingham over-extended themselves, and Ziege could have doubled the lead three minutes later.

He led the break-out but Vaesen atoned for his error on the goal by clawing away the German's powerful shot.

Birmingham's finishing continued to let them down, with John directing a free header straight at Keller from six yards

The Blues finally got their reward when Kenna moved in from the left touchline to curl a delightful right-footed shot around Keller's dive.

John wasted another good chance late on, and Keller stood his ground as Morrison bore down on goal with three minutes left.

The result left Birmingham still looking for their first back-to-back wins since returning to the Premiership, while it was Spurs' first away draw since the opening day.
