Report

Spurs rode their luck to move up to seventh in the Premiership after beating battling West Bromwich Albion at White Hart Lane.

Christian Ziege and Robbie Keane established the platform for victory with first half goals - but it was not a fair reward for the display delivered by Gary Megson's strugglers.

Albion enjoyed long periods of supremacy and could have left the capital with at least a point, only to miss a host of clear-cut chances,

Substitute Scott Dobie gave them hope when he pulled a goal back, but Gus Poyet's scrambled third gave out-of-sorts Spurs an unlikely victory.

Albion made the worst possible start, conceding a goal after only three minutes.

Teddy Sheringham was fouled, and Ziege's free-kick was allowed to sneak past Hoult as Neil Clement failed to guard his post.

Far from discouraging Megson's side, it was the signal for Albion to produce a highly impressive first half performance that contained everything except a cutting edge.

Andy Johnson was only inches away from connecting with Lee Hughes' cross, before Clement wasted Albion's best chance of the half after 14 minutes.

Jason Roberts and Hughes combined to set up Clement, who somehow shot wide of an open goal from only eight yards.

Jason Koumas was the first half's outstanding performer by some distance, and he almost got a deserved equaliser in the 27th minute with a long-range drive that was well saved by Kasey Keller.

It was a vital save, as Spurs extended their advantage three minutes later.

Keane was released into space when he ran on to Ziege's pass and beat Hoult for a second goal that was cruel on Albion.

Spurs goalkeeper Keller had an escape after 65 minutes when he upended Albion substitute Dobie as he raced clear on to Koumas's pass.

Referee Alan Wiley consulted his assistant before showing Keller a yellow card.

Keller then added insult to injury by producing a fine save from the resulting free-kick from Koumas.

Albion got the goal they deserved with 18 minutes - and it came in spectacular style from Dobie.

He looked to be posing no danger until he unleased a 25-yard angled drive which flashed past the helpess Keller into the bottom corner.

And as Spurs reeled, Clement missed another great chance, heading wide from right in front of goal.

Spurs punished Albion swiftly with eleven minutes left to seal the points when substitute Gus Poyet, on for a clearly unhappy Sheringham, bundled home after a goalmouth scramble.
