Summer signing Frederic Kanoute came off the bench and opened his goal-scoring account for Spurs as Glenn Hoddle's side got their first points of the new season.

Leeds struck first after just five minutes with Alan Smith grabbing his second goal in as many games from well outside the box.

But Spurs defender Mauricio Taricco levelled five minutes before the interval with a similarly spectacular strike and then second-half substitute Kanoute secured all three points.

Kanoute, a £4.5m signing from West Ham, was named on the bench despite being ruled out last week by Hoddle because of the groin injury picked up by the Frenchman in pre-season training.

But when Bobby Zamora went off injured midway through the second half, Kanoute was thrown on to immediately repay a slice of his transfer fee.

Leeds, who drew with Newcastle on the opening day of the Premiership, must have thought they were set for four points from two matches when Smith struck.

Dean Richards - back from injury for Tottenham - conceded a free-kick which Jody Morris rolled to Smith and the striker lashed home.

Slowly but surely, however, Hoddle's team recovered from that shock and wing-back Stephen Carr should have done better when he stabbed wide from Rohan Ricketts' excellent cross.

Zamora, making his first Premiership start in place of the injured Robbie Keane, headed just over and captain Jamie Redknapp shot straight at Paul Robinson after flicking the ball up for his own volley.

Then five minutes before half-time defender Taricco levelled the scores with a goal to match Smith's - the Argentine thumping home only his second goal in 100 appearances for the north London club.

Spurs did not want half-time to come and even Helder Postiga, growing in confidence after a disappointing debut, drilled an effort just past the post.

The interval came without Tottenham adding to their tally but Hoddle's men did start the second half brightly.

Zoumana Camara cleared well from Carr's dangerous cross, Ledley King went close from 30 yards and then Postiga swerved past Radebe and curled a good effort just wide.

Leeds boss Peter Reid reacted to the onslaught by sending on Jermaine Pennant - on loan from Arsenal - for his debut.

Pennant was roundly jeered by the home crowd because of his Highbury connections but the Spurs fans were almost silenced when Seth Johnson hooked a shot over the bar.

However, Postiga then headed just wide as Spurs pressed hard to turn their superiority into a winning goal and it finally came in the 71st minute.

A free-kick was only half-cleared by Leeds and Kanoute responded by teeing himself up and attempting an overhead kick which flew past Robinson into the net.

Reid brought on Aaron Lennon, who became the youngest Premiership player ever at 16 years and 129 days old, but the young winger could not help his team get back into the game.
