Report

Tottenham escaped with a point after being totally dominated by a Manchester City side guilty of squandering several clearcut openings.

Nicolas Anelka, Paulo Wanchope, Trevor Sinclair and Steve McManaman all had chances but continually failed to put the finishing touch to City's play.

The home side's frustration was only compounded by an inspired Kasey Keller in the Spurs goal as the struggling visitors avoided a fourth straight league defeat.

Spurs have endured some turbulent fortunes already this season but made the most of the luck that came their way at the City of Manchester stadium.

After Freddie Kanoute had poked an effort wide of the City post, the Spurs goal led a charmed life as the home side spurned chance after chance.

City striker Anelka was the first culprit when he seized on Anthony Gardner's weak header back but could not beat keeper Keller.

Three minutes later, an unmarked Sinclair was found by a pin-point Michael Tarnat cross only to mis-time his header wide to the relief of an onlooking Spurs defence.

Stephen Carr was handed the Spurs captaincy and did his part for the defence when he cleared an Anelka effort off the line.

Wanchope was also guilty of wasteful finishing when he shot too close to the busy Keller after being released on goal by a clever Anelka backheel.

Keller was continually thwarting City and was at his sharpest in getting a hand to McManaman's shot just after the half hour mark.

Darren Anderton's long range free-kick almost made City pay for their profligacy but Seaman pushed the effort wide.

A goal for Keven Keegan's side finally seemed inevitable when Wanchope was one-on-one with Keller before half-time only for the Costa Rica forward to again be denied by the Spurs keeper.

City were back on the offensive after the break and Wanchope headed high and Shaun Wright-Phillips curled a shot the wrong side of the post.

Tottenham were penned back almost permanently in their own half and Keller again rescued Spurs with another fine save from Wanchope.

And the danger of Spurs catching City on the counter-attack almost became a reality minutes from the end.

But striker Robbie Keane, who had a penalty appeal turned down after a challenge from Sun Jihai, failed to connect properly with an overhead kick.

Robbie Fowler also went close late on for City whose goal attempts gradually became wider and wider off target as their effort petered out to leave them having to settle with a point.
