Darren Anderton reminded everyone that pre-season isn't just about strikers with a majestic goal and display at Norwich City.
But you couldn't keep one of our new hitmen out of the headlines - Bobby Zamora grabbed another poacher's effort to make it three goals in two halves of football since his move from Brighton.
Simon Davies bagged his second of the summer to complete another successful friendly and four wins out of four so far.
The spotlight has rightly been on Zamora and Helder Postiga pre-season but Anderton stole the show on this occasion with a magnificent display and goal at Carrow Road.
With half-hour on the clock, Steve Carr found him in a yard of space 30 yards out and the former England man took a touch before curling the ball into the top corner.
That capped a first half performance right out of the top drawer from the 31-year-old, always in space to receive the ball, rarely missing the target with his passing and digging in as well - it was his block on the edge of the area that denied one of City's best two chances of the half.
That chance fell to Jim Brennan after 12 minutes in the home side's best spell - three minutes earlier, the giant Malky Mackay headed Phil Mulryne's free-kick over from close range.
We were generally on top either side of those chances in a competitive, high-tempo friendly.
Postiga, Kazu Toda, Simon Davies and most notably Robbie Keane all went close with Keane's header - again from Anderton's cross - bringing the best out of impressive home keeper Robert Green.
Zamora arrived on the scene at half-time alongside Matty Etherington and took 10 minutes to make his mark, sliding a reverse pass to Simon Davies who finished the move off in style for 2-0.
A host of substitutes followed and one of them, goalkeeper Rob Burch, had to be at his best to somehow tip Abbey's volley over from close range after 65 minutes.
Zamora went close again two minutes later but his moment wasn't far away as he read Mackay's attempted header home and prodded the ball underneath substitute keeper Paul Crichton into the empty net.
