Report

Southampton increased the pressure on under-fire Tottenham boss Glenn Hoddle with an emphatic win at White Hart Lane.

Saints forward James Beattie grabbed a first-half brace, his second a super curling free-kick.

Strike partner Kevin Phillips put the visitors firmly in control with their third after half-time.

Freddie Kanoute pulled one back immediately for Spurs, but it was little consolation for their frustrated fans and increasingly beleaguered boss.

Indeed, the home side got off to the worst possible start by handing Southampton a goal after just two minutes.

Goalkeeper Kasey Keller sliced a clearance behind for a corner and as Matt Oakley's cross came in, Beattie escaped some poor marking to power in a header for his fifth goal of the season.

Spurs replied positively and on six minutes, Kanoute bounced a header on to the top of the bar from Rohan Ricketts' cross.

Saints keeper Paul Jones had to be alert to keep out Jamie Redknapp's cross as it deflected off a defender and as Spurs upped the tempo, Kanoute surged into the box, only to be halted by Michael Svensson's timely challenge.

Tottenham had penalty appeals waved away by referee Andy D'Urso when Bobby Zamora's cross struck Graeme Le Saux's arm as the former England defender slid in to challenge.

Spurs were showing plenty of fight and as Le Saux backed off, Stephen Carr took advantage to drive inside and fire a shot into the side netting from 20 yards.

But just as Spurs looked like finding a way back into the game, Beattie struck a cruel blow in the most emphatic fashion.

The England striker picked himself up after being fouled 30 yards out and curled an exquisite free-kick around the wall and into the top left-hand corner of Keller's net.

Hoddle desperately tried to change things at half-time by introducing Darren Anderton and Robbie Keane for Stephane Dalmat and Zamora.

But it was Southampton who could have stretched their lead even further, with Beattie hammering another 30-yard free-kick straight at Keller and Phillips hitting the underside of the bar from Fabrice Fernandes' cross.

Saints did eventually score a deserved, if fortunate, third on 60 minutes minutes when Anthony Gardner's challenge ricocheted the ball into the net off Phillips.

Spurs grabbed a lifeline straight away when Kanoute converted Keane's cross, the first goal Saints had conceded for eight and a half hours.

The Frenchman dragged a good shot wide from 18 yards soon after as Spurs pressed forward.

But Phillips struck the bar for a second time as Saints held on to secure their first win at White Hart Lane since 1992.
