Jermain Defoe grabbed a brace as Tottenham knocked Bolton - last season's finalists - out of the Carling Cup after extra-time.

Bolton took the lead through Henrik Pedersen before Defoe drilled in a 20-yard shot to equalise.

Jay-Jay Okocha restored the home lead with a penalty only for a bundled in Goran Bunjevcevic shot to level again.

Tottenham's Michael Brown and Defoe scored in extra time and held on despite a late Les Ferdinand goal.

The match started under worrying circumstances with Bolton Khalilou Fadiga, who has a history of heart problems, being stretched off after collapsing during the warm up.

Bolton claimed the midfielder suffered an injury and the team put any problem to one side as they started brightly.

Pedersen could have put them in front after 13 minutes but put an effort from six yards wide following a cross from El Hadji Diouf.

But Pedersen will claim the opener even though Spurs defender Ledley King appeared to get the final touch when a Fernando Hierro free-kick caused confusion in the visitors back line.

There were chances at both ends before Defoe produced a clinical finish to equalise and score his first goal in a month.

Diouf again crossed to provide Pedersen with a chance only for the Dane to shoot over before a Bunjevcevic tug on Kevin Davies earned Bolton a spot-kick.

Okocha slotted in from 12 yards only for Bunjevcevic to make up for his error by bundling in a goal to take the match into extra-time.

And Brown headed in a Carrick free-kick to put Spurs ahead for the first time in the match and the lead was consolidated when Defoe netted his second of the night.

Former Spurs striker Ferdinand gave Bolton some late hope but the visitors hung onto their lead to set up a fourth round tie away at Burnley.
