Goals from Robbie Keane and Edgar Davids gave Tottenham a hard-fought win over Wigan at the JJB Stadium. Striker Keane grabbed Spurs' first when he took advantage of a defensive mistake from Arjan De Zeeuw to round goalkeeper Mike Pollitt.
Davids doubled his side's lead when he picked up the ball fractionally inside Wigan's half, bypassed tame challenges, to rifle past Pollitt.
Lee McCulloch reduced the deficit late in the game to set up a tense finale.
Following last week's thumping at the hands of Premiership 'giants' Arsenal, many believed that Wigan's long honeymoon in the top flight had come to an end.
After all, here was a club with modest means and an even more modest squad who have punched above their weight in their first season in the Premiership.
However, as cliched as it may sound, they possess a fantastic fighting spirit.
That alone might not be enough to keep Paul Jewell's soldiers in second spot come the end of this campaign, but it will almost certainly give them another bite at the Premiership cherry.
What will worry Jewell is the defensive mistakes that plagued his side last week against the Gunners, and against Spurs on Saturday.
With only eight minutes on the clock a through-ball from Finland's Teemu Tainio was dealt with ineptly by De Zeeuw, allowing Keane to sneak in for the visitors' opener.
Keane, who has been keeping England international Jermain Defoe out of the first team, appeared to be trying to prove a point to manager Martin Jol throughout the match.
The Republic of Ireland star was busy and a constant thorn in Wigan's side, and will have surely retained his place for Tottenham's next game, against Sunderland.
But it was a usually goal-shy Davids, not Keane or strike partner Mido, who gave the visitors a two-goal cushion and in turn, scored his first goal for the club.
The bespectacled Dutch midfielder ran almost half the weather-worn pitch, unchallenged, and finished with a low drive into Pollitt's right-hand corner.
Wigan continued to fight to the end and got their reward when McCulloch tapped in after Spurs shotstopper Paul Robinson palmed away Jason Roberts' cross.
But that was in the 90th minute - not enough time, even for Jewell's army, to salvage a point.
Wigan boss Paul Jewell: "We started brightly enough, but again we make a mistake and when you do that you get punished at this level. "We gifted them a goal and from 1-0 down we are left chasing the game.
"We have made mistakes in the last two matches now. They happen, but we have to cut them out. It's still a learning curve for us at this level."
