Report

Tottenham cruised to victory over Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta in the Uefa Cup first round first leg.

Spurs were 4-0 up at the break, with Younes Kaboul's fifth minute header providing the opening goal.

Michael Dawson scored the second with a close-range finish, Robbie Keane's volley made it 3-0, before Darren Bent slid in for the fourth soon afterwards.

Jermain Defoe scored with a sublime chip and then a superb strike, while Anton Zlogar netted for Famagusta.

Spurs have had a miserable time of it in the early stages of the season, their less than impressive league form throwing into doubt the future of manager Martin Jol.

In trying to kickstart Spurs' season, one of Jol's problems has been which of his four strikers to deploy, which has prompted plenty of speculation about Defoe's status at the club.

Keane and Bent were Jol's choices to begin Thursday's game, while Dimitar Berbatov and Defoe were named as substitutes.

Defoe made his entry just past the hour and lit up the game with a couple of exceptional strikes.

If Keane, Bent and Defoe were all to get goals, it was Jol's centre-back pairing that put Spurs in control of this game.

On five minutes Kaboul glanced a header past Famagusta goalkeeper Arjan Beqaj following Tom Huddlestone's corner.

For the next 30 minutes Famagusta made a game for it and Kaboul needed to be alert to tackle de Matos Fabinho, while Lukasz Sosin might have done better with a headed chance.

Soon after Famagusta's defensive uncertainty from corners proved costly when Dawson diverted Pascal Chimbonda's header past Beqaj.

Two more goals in the space of a couple of minutes ensured Jol probably had to deliver the easiest of half-time team talks.

Keane scored with a low volley, the Irishman quickly controlling Benoit Assou-Ekotto's before arrowing his shot past Beqaj.

Bent missed several chances before he scored, though he was unlucky not to have won a penalty early on when he looked to have been brought down by Lambros Lambrou.

The Famagusta left-back played a large part in Spurs' fourth goal, his miscued clearance leaving Beqaj stranded.

Bent was quick to squeeze the ball home from a difficult angle.

Just past the hour Keane made way for Defoe, who almost immediately extended Spurs' lead with a beautifully executed chip.

On the edge of the penalty area Defoe delicately floated the ball over Beqaj to score his first goal of the campaign.

Famagusta might have been outclassed for most of the match but the visitors did take a goal back to Cyprus, Zlogar scuffing a shot past Radek Cerny.

But Defoe had one more contribution to make as the England international rattled in a shot after picking up a Huddlestone pass.

Given those two goals it will be interesting to see if Defoe starts when Spurs play away at Bolton on Sunday.

Tottenham manager Martin Jol:

""Robbie Keane could have scored three, Darren Bent took his goal and Dimitar Berbatov was our top scorer in Europe last season. "If they push me all the time it makes it difficult me.

"Jermain is the best finisher in the league around the box but Robbie is our top scorer in the league."
